That is deliberate. Past the first few pins the lock starts fighting back: ghost wards stay invisible until the needle is close, creeping wards slide around the dial, twin wards want both halves, and brittle wards close while you hesitate. Each carries its own mark on the dial.
Opening a chest — every fifth pin — returns one pick, up to a maximum of three. A deep run can recover from an early fumble.
Copper Chest respects your device's silent switch. Check the mute toggle at the top left of the dial, then your ringer switch. Sound and haptics have separate toggles.
